Flower arrangements for your head table

Ever wonder what type of flowers are best for a head table at a wedding reception? The answer is — any type of flower. Of course, there are different styles that are best for different lengths of head table.

This head table is actually shorter than a lot of head tables I’ve decorated, seating about eight people, I think. So the arrangement isn’t that long. Flowers in this arrangement, for a golden anniversary celebration, include yellow roses, orange daisies (not the gerber type), stock, orchids and stargazers.

Miss you!

My apologies for the lack of posts (even though I usually post pretty sparsely). I’ve been under the weather all week and haven’t really been feeling like sitting at the computer. Plus, when I am at the computer, I’d much rather surf all the Black Friday ads. :)

In the meantime, as I nurse myself back to perfect health, are there any topics you’d like me to cover or revisit? I could try to revisit vases, or decorating with fabric or even staircases, based on recent search engine visits. Heheh. Or is there something else you’d rather I write about? I will have no idea until you let me know in the comments.

I’d rather write on something new, but I just can’t think of what that is until my throat stop hurting. So until then, throw me some challenges. Bring it on!

Seat covers for your wedding reception

When I searched Flickr for seat covers, there was just one result for anything wedding related — everything else was toilet seat covers (I would never have made that connection!) and car seat covers. Sorry, when someone says seat covers, I think of weddings and how they brighten up a room. But that’s just me.

I think, if you look through the bridal magazines, seat covers seem to be what everyone is doing, but I don’t think that’s the case in reality. First off, they can be expensive — say you get seat covers at $5 each, but you have 500 guests. That’s another $2,500, excluding any fees for delivery, set up and pick-up. But I think they can be worth it, and I’ve got some pictures to prove it. Above, if you were wondering, is a wedding reception we decorated at the Our Lady Of the Angels Cathedral‘s conference center.

What does your color say about you?

My husband is a designer at our local newspaper here and quite honestly is where I’ve learned any and all graphics and design expertise, especially when it comes to programs like Photoshop and InDesign, which is how I created the above logo. Yesterday, he was telling me about Colorscope, a color palette like a horoscope. He told me that description for the color he liked the best really corresponded to his personality.

When it comes to weddings, I don’t think too many brides really think about the meaning or personality attached to the colors they choose — either its simply a favorite color or they know they look best in that color, or both. But still, I think its an interesting exercise. For example, above, I used a darker pink organza that I might describe as dusty rose. Probably the closest corresponding color on the colorscope would be Strawberry, which carries the following personality:

Winter weddings are underrated

I’m a born-and-raised Southern California girl (not too many of us blogging out there), so I’ve never been to a wedding where it was colder than 70 degrees. Yep, that would be true. Even when decorating weddings, the rare time we had a wedding when there was rain, it was still at least 50 or 60 degrees — apparently, that’s still warm to East Coasters. Hey, what can I say? It’s sunshiney out here. Heheh.

However, I got to thinking the other day. Is it just me, or when we think of our weddings, we think of outdoors, sunshine, warm weather, bared shoulders and long necks, gazebos or beaches? That’s all warm weather stuff. Its odd, because I’m of the opinion that cold weather clothes are actually more fun to wear. Not only that, the cold weather lends itself to spectacular surroundings — not decorations, mind you, although, weddings held in cold weather climes almost look as if they’re decorated by God.

For example, check out this fountain. I’ve shot fountains before — in fact, I love shooting moving water — but I can’t think of a more gorgeous picture than this one. The ice almost looks like diamonds decorating the fountain. Cold weather seems lend itself to really dramatic photos. I’ll show you what I mean.

Poll: What month are you getting married in 2009?

Friends Belinda and Karsten marry in January

So, its that time of year again! We’re in November, fast approaching the holidays, but I know many brides-to-be have already gotten engaged (I personally know at least three planning 2009 weddings, and a third, I’m not sure what her date is) and are in the throes of wedding planning now. The past two years, two “auspicious” dates dominated the wedding date selection debate — 7/7/07 and 8/8/08. I put auspicious in quotes since 7 and 8 are not lucky numbers for everyone. Hey, I could’ve said “so-called.” Heheh.

Anyway, there is another one of those triple numbers coming up — 9/9/09, but its on a Wednesday. However, if 9 is a lucky number for you, you could really save on mid-week rates for your reception or banquet venue.

But anyway, it’s time for another poll — what month will you be getting married in 2009?

Bouquets for the bride and bridesmaid

It occurred to me recently that I hardly ever write about actual flowers. That’s possibly because flowers are not my forte, but I’m making an effort to learn more, so I figure I should bring you along for the ride.

I decided to begin this journey with bouquets. In the years I’ve had a digital camera, I didn’t take as many bouquet shots as I probably could have — my mom was always urging me to take pictures of the arrangements and the decorations, not so much the bouquets. But if you think about it, bouquets are much more personal to the bride — it’s what they’re going to carry all day and be photographed with all day. Above, is a simple white bouquet of roses and white stephanotis, wrapped with lace. Also, forgive the arm in the picture — I know I shot this right before we started setting up a reception. Heheh.
