Happy newly engaged!

No doubt that a whole flurry of people got emails, Myspace and Facebook messages and texts announcing the happy news during the holidays. (I didn’t get any messages like this, but I could tell from my Facebook friend statuses that a few others had.) My questions is — what do brides-to-be do in the New Year?

Begin planning weddings, of course! So what’s the first step? Take this poll and let me know:

About.com has a handy list of the first steps you should take after getting engaged. It’s about as silly as my poll….I cannot imagine anyone getting engaged, then googling, “What steps should I take after getting engaged?” Then again, maybe there are some doing that. Who knows. Anyway, I might change up this list a little bit.

  1. Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Text and email everyone you got engaged!
  2. Don’t buy a journal, start a blog! That combines About.com’s #1 and #3 tips, plus allows you to tell everyone what you did.
  3. Set a date, but forget #4 — Set The Tone. That will come out with the choices you make in reception site, ceremony, officiant, number of attendants, etc.
  4. Set the budget. What?! I would make this #2, at least. Believe me, this is important.

I didn’t get engaged or married in what you might consider a traditional way, so I can’t imagine how excited a new bride-to-be will be at the very beginning. My advice…savor the excitement! Try not to get bogged down in the stress and bewilderment of planning a huge event, staying under budget and making myriad choices. Don’t forget, you can always elope! Just kidding. (Not really! :) )

And, FYI, check back often, because I can already tell this is going to be a hopping year. I know at least three friends getting married this year, plus I may be decorating the wedding of one friend, which I’m looking forward to, since she’s renting a house in Malibu for the event! How cool is that? So don’t forget to subscribe!

I would say that the first thing to do after getting engaged is to take a deep breath and swear to yourself that you’ll retain some perspective. Having just survived my sister’s excruciatingly elaborate wedding this past weekend, I can attest to the fact that there is something about weddings that can turn perfectly normal women into, well, insane facists. Just sayin.
