Get married for under $1,000

You’re probably reading the title of this post, thinking, “is she nuts?” Not at all. In fact, if I could have made it $700, but it doesn’t have quite the same ring as $1000. But I’m warning you, this method of getting married is not for most brides. Basically, I’m going to share the story of how I got married.

You’d think a wedding decorator would have a huge, fancy wedding right? You’d be wrong. Some might call this method eloping at home. There’s a pretty interesting story. Interested?

Guest table centerpieces from real weddings

One of the things I think sets this blog apart from other wedding sites and definitely from wedding magazines and those oh-so-addictive wedding shows is that I like to show pictures of real people’s weddings. A lot of the photos I’ve shown have been from weddings I’ve decorated myself, while others have been pictures I’ve found on Flickr or have picked up from friends. It’s sort of like attending a bunch of weddings in one blog post.

This wedding was attended on July 4th by my houseguest and friend, Belinda, at Villa Del Sol d’Oro in Sierra Madre. (They have a terrible website.) Susie, the bride, adores pink so all the decorating touches had touches of hot pink. The cute little centerpieces by Casa Blanca Flower Shop were bowl vases, holding what appears to be hot pink, blooming Colombian roses, which have huge blooms. You don’t have to use roses for this kind of centerpiece, of course — gerber daisies, lisianthus, peonies (which can be more expensive than roses, depending on the season), ranunculus, and, what I would use — stargazer lilies — would totally work. But they wouldn’t be fully pink, but still gorgeous.

A Minnesota Desi wedding

By Shruti Mathur Desai

You may recognize my name from reporting back to Wedding Decorator about the various weddings I’ve attended. But now I’ve been invited to write a bit about a very special wedding (to me): My own!

A bit of background: My fiance Ravi and I met on our second day of college at the University of Minnesota. It took us a year to start dating, but it’s been eight wonderful years with him! Last September, he ambushed me with a surprise proposal and on July 4, 2009, we were married at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul Minnesota.

I will spread out my wedding planning process over a few posts and I hope to add layers with pictures, as they come in from my talented friends and family.

First comes love, then comes marriage…

Then comes a baby in a baby carriage!

If you are a regular reader and have noticed my posts slowing down, its for good reason. I’m pregnant! Click here to get more info.

So, my apologies for the slowdown in posts, I will post again tonight to make up. And, if there is anyone who would like to help me out with a few entries here and there, I would love it!

Bridal shower and wedding giveaways

We’re full on into the Summer of Weddings now! I don’t know about anyone else, but I know of three brides tying the knot in July, including two on July 4. So its been a busy summer, even though I’m not attending even one of these weddings, but have been included in adjacent events. :) I kind of like it that way.

One thing that’s nice is the little things you take away from each event, like this little teacup full of goodies I was given at a recent bridal shower. Besides the ceramic teacup, it came with personalized gum, Lifesavers (or another rolled mint, I haven’t opened it yet) and teabags enclosed in wrappers labeled “Love is Brewing!” Heehee. Adorable.

Simple summer wedding in Long Beach

Summer is in full swing in the Southern California area — I’m blasting my air conditioner as I type — so I figured I’d revisit a few summer weddings that have been sent to me.

All photos by Bob Christian. Thanks Bob!

This wedding took place in June 2006 at the Reef Restaurant in Long Beach. Now, remember what I said earlier about summer weddings and your guests? Please provide shade! These poor folks. There’s only one canopy, for the musicians. But you really can’t argue with the venue. Let me show you the view from the back…
