How to decorate a simple head table and backdrop

Very quietly, I added a Contact form to this site, and a few people have been using it to ask how to do certain things they’ve seen pictures of on this blog. Here’s one of those questions.

Hi Darleene, I found the attached photo on your blog and had questions regarding they type and width of the fabric used for the head table.. I just love this look and would like to attempt to recreate it for my wedding in September. Any advice you have is greatly appreciated.

The photo she’s talking about is this one:

Brenda, I wish I could tell you to do A, B and C, and boom, you’ve got what you need to recreate this look. But it’s not that easy.

Instead, maybe I can give you a few tips. First, the material I worked with here included a 20-yard piece of gold organza and a 10-yard piece of English netting for the table and a 20-yard piece of gold organza for the backdrop. Second, the PVC pipe setup with the netting and lights — that was not mine. That belonged to the venue, I just dressed it up a little.

As for the draping, I use pearl-studded corsage pins and white pipe cleaners to gather and attach the draping to the tables. This system is best when the venue uses a table skirt clipped on to an already-tableclothed table — that way, I can pin the draping to both the table cloth and the skirt, to ensure the whole set up stays in place, no matter who brushes by the table.

For the gold underlay on the table, take your gold organza and find the center, gather that up as neatly as you can and wrap a pipe cleaner, twisting the ends. Loop that twisted end and pin the pipe cleaner to the table. Take one end of the organza and loop it to one side, giving a little more on the bottom so it gives it that pleasing draped look, then pin it all together at one end, using the same method for the center. Repeat for the other side.

The directions for the organza should give you something of an understanding on what you can do for the English netting.

As for the backdrop, I didn’t use pins or any tape — I just looped it all and left the excess fabric behind it.

One day, when I have time, I’ll do my best to post a step-by-step tutorial of how to drape a table like this. Or shoot a video!

  1. Hi. I’m planning my daughter’s sweet sixteen this August 2012. I have absolutely no idea where or how to start on decorating the tables or her head table for that matter. Her theme is Hollywood Glamour with colors black, gold, red & silver. Her dress is black and gold and the girls are black and red. I was thinking of doing the head table tablecloth in gold, but i noticed in all the pictures of head tables that the cloth is white or cream with the colors being the decorations. I am lost. Please help. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi Michele,

I could not help but read your comment and see if I could help. I would use Gold as her accent color. Now we dont want red or too much black. What we can do is use those as accent as well. A very cream tablecloth, and chair covers will do…..Now for the head table you can use Gold chargers and black for the rest of the guests, don’t forget your napkins. Now you will also need fun centerpieces but with a wow factor……..Huge vases will be nice but you will have lots of option to choose from. I do decor for those kinds of parties and maybe you can contact me at delvinseventservices@yahoo.com.
    All the best!
    Ruthie.
