House wedding in Malibu

They came, they saw, they got married. The wedding that I’d been preparing for the past few months came and went Saturday.

How’d it go? Well, Jinah got married, so that went off without a hitch! Everything that needed to be decorated was decorated, and I didn’t fall off any ladders, thank God for that. I’ll show you what I mean in a minute.

However, as its Monday morning as I’m writing this, I do have to confess I am still in recovery. Saturday was a lot warmer than I thought it was going to be so I didn’t bring water with me as I decorated that morning. I think the combination of not drinking any water till about 3 p.m., all the time I spent in the sun, and the lack of sleep (I have a tendency to not sleep right away when I know I have to be up early, so I ended up getting about 4 hours) left me groggy and headache-y most of the day and Sunday.

The ceremony was held in front of this portico, as I mentioned before. Now, check out that ladder — I don’t know how tall it is, exactly, but I had to perch on the third rung from the top. Do you have any idea how high that is? The first loop I made with this organza, I had to literally take a moment, say a prayer and then step up gingerly. I’m not afraid of heights, but that ladder was high, and below the railing is a sheer drop to the concrete below. After getting up there the first time, though, I was OK. And, speaking of that tall ladder, when Trinity (my assistant that day) saw that I was going to be getting up on that ladder — he was not happy. But he still, stoically, held the ladder for me. Hee! That’s my hubby.

Then it was to the backyard. I briefly considered hanging the draping from the bottom rung at first, but realized that was a silly idea. I draped the back patio’s railings with turquoise blue and sea green fabric. Both fabrics were organza, but the blue one was shinier. I didn’t even use any fuzzy wire (pipe cleaner) to attach the fabric to the railings — I simply twisted the fabric so it wouldn’t come loose. It was a good thing it was twisted pretty firmly, too, since it turned out to be a very windy day.

Here is what it looked like after everything was pretty much said and done. Unfortunately, that aforementioned windiness did loosen one of twists I made, which accounts for that extra long tail on the sea green organza to the right. Where are the chairs, you may be asking? They’re at the ceremony site, in the front of the house — a smart way to save on money. 🙂

Here is what the centerpiece ended up looking like. Remember these vases? Yep. Those vases! The draping material I brought turned out to match perfectly. With all the candles — three votives on each table, a candle in each vase, plates of candles inside the house, plus floating candles and Christmas lights around the trees — the place had some lovely mood lighting.

I didn’t want the pool to go to waste, so I asked the florist (my Auntie Daisy, my mom’s florist buddy) for a few bunches of Gerber daisies that I removed the stems from and floated in the pool. I then added the floating candles, but unfortunately, the fountains kind of sent everything floating to the sides of the pool.

And by the way, I did not only drape the outside of the house — I also draped the indoor staircase with English netting. I wanted to soften the staircase for when Jinah walked down in her wedding dress, to make it feel more like a wedding venue. In the afternoon sunset lighting, it looked gorgeous.

The happy couple — Jinah with her wildflower-style bouquet and Matt with his pristine white suit and neat boutonniere. This picture, technically, is a bit too washed out with light, but I love the effect so I didn’t color correct it. 🙂 Congratulations, Jinah and Matt!

  1. You rock. The place was amazing and had just the right amount of decoration to feel like a wedding venue and yet maintained the natural beauty of both the Malibu Hills and the home’s architecture.

The centerpieces were amazing, especially at night when the candle light made the vases, yes those vases, come alive.

I loved the flowers in the pool and the candles a well. I was too busy running around during the wedding but noticed them the next day.

    Thanks again.

Matt, it was a pleasure to work with you guys, truly. You guys are so laid back! Marriage will be a snap for you two. 😉

  2. Darleene – you did an amazing job!! Granted, I wasn’t a control-freak bridezilla, but I was almost too much the opposite, saying “Oh… I don’t know. You decide.” “Umm… if you think that’ll look good I’m fine.”.. which may have been worse because you didn’t get much instruction other than “Just make it look good and wedding-y.” Well, you took those loosey-goosey instructions and made the event fantastic! And the result was a perfect day with very beautiful but not overdone decorations, paying regular costs rather than “wedding” costs, and no one’s head was split open from falling from two-story ladders. 🙂 I’d highly recommend Darleene!!!
